Our Work

Cost of Living Support

Merton Labour has invested £22 million into cost-of-living support for residents, including a Council Tax support scheme for 10,000 residents and free cost-of-living events across libraries in the borough, where residents can speak to expert advisers about benefits, debt and money, energy-saving, health and wellbeing, food and employment.

Merton’s Big Sports Day

Merton’s Big Sports Day is an annual opportunity launched by Merton Labour to give all residents the chance to try a new sport or activity for free and connect with local clubs and coaches. The Big Sports Day took place at Wimbledon Park this year with over 70 free attractions and activities, with almost 7,000 residents together to try a new sport or physical activity!

Free Swimming

Merton Labour has introduced and made permanent free swimming for over 65s and children at all of our leisure centres as part of our mission to provide free and low-cost opportunities to exercise across the borough.

Check out the Council website for details on how and when to book.

Garth Road on the Road

Merton Labour have introduced ‘Garth Road on the Road’, a moving skip that travels around Merton to help residents dispose of household rubbish, recycling, green waste, and bulky items for free without needing to travel.

Safer Streets

Merton is one of the safest boroughs in London - and we’re committed to keeping it that way. That’s why we have been boosted our Safer Street project, working in partnership with Met police, British Transport police, Merton Street Pastors, Love Wimbledon and other charities to improve the safety of our night-time economy, including setting up a ‘Safe Zone’ outside Wimbledon train station and in Mitcham Town Centre..

Protecting Private Renters

We have introduced ‘Selective Landlord Licensing’ for private rented homes in targeted areas of the borough, as part of our committed to ensure all residents live in a safe, secure and affordable home. The Council has used powers to seize homes from those who have persistently failed to license their rented properties, sending a clear message to renters and landlords.

Mini Musicians

Children across Merton are benefitting from Merton Labour’s investment in Mini Musicians, a a pioneering programme set to revolutionise how music is taught across the borough. Over 650 pupils, aged four to seven, across 10 different schools, are benefiting from specialist teaching, with the project aiming to use the joy of music to improve children’s social development, following the isolation of the pandemic.

Big Screens

As part of our mission to become the London Borough of Sport, we have supported the installation of big screens in the Piazza in Wimbledon, at Cannons House and Morden Park, showing the Wimbledon Tennis Championship, Olympic Games, and Women’s Euros Final - to inspire more people to get involved in the sporting activities taking place in their area.
