Four New Pledges for a Cleaner, Greener and Safer Borough
Today, Merton Labour has announced four new pledges to make our borough cleaner, greener, and safer
Since 2022, we've worked hard to make our borough a better place to live, work, and raise a family.
Our recent Merton Residents Survey showed us just how much our communities value the work the Council does. However, it also made clear that more must be done to make Merton cleaner, greener, and safer for everyone.
That’s why we are announcing four major pledges to ensure that our neighbourhoods remain places we can all be proud of.
These pledges will be rolled out over the next 12 months, with regular updates available for residents at: www.merton.gov.uk/fourpledges
Pledge 1: Cracking Down on Antisocial Behaviour with a Permanent Safer Streets Team
We know that residents want to feel safer in their communities.
That’s why we are establishing a permanent Safer Streets Team, dedicated to tackling antisocial behaviour across the borough.
Six officers will patrol in pairs, covering Mitcham, Morden, and Wimbledon. Patrols will take place every week, in every ward, during the day, at night, and over the weekend.
These patrols will see officers team up with the police to walk local beats and tackle street drinking and drug use, enforce the law, issue fines, as well as spotting fly tipping and speaking to residents and businesses.
Pledge 2: Expanding ‘Pop-up Tips’ to Tackle Fly Tipping
We will tackle the scourge of fly tipping by expanding our pop-up tips so that every neighbourhood has one near them four times a year.
Our Pop-up tips have been hugely popular with residents, and so we are increasing them to help residents dispose of bulky waste, and tackle fly tipping and illegal dumping.
You can receive alerts on when the ‘Pop Up Tip’ will be in your area here:
Pledge 3: Planting 1,000 More Street Trees for a Greener Borough
Merton is already home to beautiful parks and green spaces, but we want to bring more greenery to our streets as well.
That’s why we will plant 1,000 more street trees over the next year, beginning in the areas with the lowest tree canopy.
These new trees will help improve air quality, enhance biodiversity, and brighten our neighbourhoods.
Pledge 4: Making Bike Ownership Easier by Doubling Bike Hangars
Lots of residents have told us it is difficult to own and store a bike, especially if they live in a flat or HMO.
That’s why, to help make it easier to own a bike, we are going to double the number of bike hangars in Merton, focusing on areas of high density and where existing requests have been made.
This will help break down the barriers to owning and using a bike in Merton, and help more residents be able to cycle
Delivering for Merton
We are committed to delivering on these promises and making Merton a cleaner, greener, and safer place for everyone.
